McDonald's Executives Learn About Sustainable Cattle Production in MT

27/06/2023

Executives from Arcos Dorados Brasil, the parent company of McDonald's, along with representatives from Marfrig, visited Bom Futuro on June 19 to explore sustainable cattle production practices.

The focus of their visit was on the beef supply that serves a global fast-food chain. “Sustainable sourcing is a fundamental pillar of our strategy, especially regarding beef, one of our main menu items. We are the only restaurant chain with a policy to purchase meat from deforestation-free areas, supported by satellite geomonitoring, so seeing the processes here makes us very satisfied,” said Marie Tarisse, Senior Manager of Commitment and Sustainable Development at Arcos Dorados.

Ricardo Guedes, Vice President of Operations at Arcos Dorados Brasil, noted the importance of immersing in the company's supply chain to understand product quality and sourcing. “By visiting Bom Futuro’s facilities, we realized the scale and complexity of their processes. There is traceability, origin mapping of the animals, and we can see that we are in good hands for beef supply,” he stated.

During their visit, the executives also learned about Bom Futuro's agricultural activities, from seed production to biological input production at the biofactory.

Bom Futuro has a herd of over 100,000 cattle, making it a significant supplier for slaughterhouses and partners for companies like McDonald's. Durval Cavalcante, Director of Processed Foods at Marfrig, expressed surprise at the visit. “People have no idea about the technology behind this production and the structure we saw here. It is companies of this scale that deliver the highest quality to the market,” he remarked.

Sustainability is a cross-cutting theme in the beef production chain, starting on the farm and extending through all links until it reaches the hamburger. “Production is one of the most important stages and is often not well understood by the general consumer. We need to showcase production that is environmentally sound and socially responsible regarding employees. What we saw here assures us that these concepts are being followed,” said Leonel Almeida, Sustainability Manager at Marfrig.
