Five Professions You Didn’t Know Were Part of the Agro Sector

05/09/2023

The job market in the agribusiness sector is expanding and includes professions that are not necessarily linked to the field.

When you think of agribusiness, do large crops, vast herds, and massive machinery come to mind? And when considering people who work in the field, do agronomists, machine operators, or cattle herders pop up in your thoughts?

The range of professions within the Brazilian agribusiness sector is much broader than many might imagine. With technology and innovations, almost any specialty can align with agriculture. “The agribusiness sector is a wealth of opportunities. The market operates 24/7, which creates more work, more shifts, and generates more jobs for more people,” says Victor Sakitani, leadership coach at Bom Futuro.

While the common perception links agriculture and livestock to the field—such as planting, harvesting, caring for livestock, and jobs closely related to these tasks—it’s essential to recognize the connections within agribusiness, which consists of a chain of services leading to the end product, Sakitani reflects.

Here’s a list of some professions that may not seem obvious but are indeed part of the agribusiness sector:

  1. Architecture – Architect Larissa Belmonte has worked at Bom Futuro for almost eight years. She conducts architectural surveys for improvements at the units, designs projects, and oversees construction. “It’s different from traditional architecture because my activities are directed towards supporting agribusiness. When I tell people I work at the company, they’re surprised to learn about this aspect. I’m happy to see the impact of my work on the daily operations,” she says.
  2. Warehouse Management – The role of a warehouse manager in a production unit is crucial as it involves managing stock and delivering parts to various sectors. Esdras Nascimento Santo has been at Bom Futuro for just over a year and has noticed differences compared to other companies. “Here, there’s organization and aligned communication between coordinators, supervisors, and farm workers. The operational system also facilitates warehouse activities, from piece delivery to transfers and purchase requests,” he shares.
  3. Nursing – Nursing technician Rosilene Alves Contrim focuses on workplace safety. With four and a half years at Bom Futuro, she finds her role different from those in hospitals. “It’s quite different from hospital nursing, where you work with patients and illnesses. Here, my focus is on promoting and preventing occupational accidents and diseases. I love what I do and am currently pursuing a degree in nursing to specialize in the field,” she explains.
  4. Programming – Brazilian agribusiness is defined by innovation and technology, making IT professionals vital to the sector's growth. Lucas Pedroso, a systems programmer at Bom Futuro for nearly five years, develops mobile applications for Android and iOS. “These apps are related to tasks performed by the computer system, which we adapt for mobile execution, enhancing process agility and avoiding rework,” he explains. He finds it rewarding to visit the farms and see the apps facilitating and streamlining field activities.
  5. Social Work – Roselina da Cruz Souza Camarão de Oliveira has worked in the Human Resources department for nine years. The social worker uses active listening to support employees, identifying potential problems and needs for social assistance. “The role of social work within the company is very humanized, providing social and emotional support to employees and their families, offering guidance, interventions, and referrals when necessary,” she states. Additionally, she executes learning and benefits programs among other services. “Choosing a professional area and doing your job with love, dedication, and commitment is essential for feeling fulfilled in what you do,” she affirms.
