The goal of the Pink October campaign at Bom Futuro was to openly discuss breast cancer and cervical cancer with its employees. In nearly all of the company's 42 units in Mato Grosso, awareness events were held to promote disease prevention, featuring lectures, guidance, and sharing of experiences.
In a special episode of the web series "Lado a Lado," employees Mariana Machado and Rosilene Cotrim shared their struggles and victories following their cancer diagnoses.
Mariana, a cost analyst at the headquarters in Cuiabá, shared that she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021 after performing a self-exam and finding a lump. “It was a shock to the whole family; no one is prepared for such a diagnosis. But the treatment was quick; I underwent 19 sessions of radiation therapy from Monday to Friday,” she recalls.
Rosilene, a nursing technician at Fazenda São Miguel in Campo Verde, was diagnosed with cervical cancer during routine exams. “When I found myself in that situation, I was very scared; I felt lost,” she recounts.
She underwent surgery and is now cured. “It was wonderful to repeat the exam and see that the disease was gone. I had the support of God, my family, and today I am a different person. I now realize that there are more important things to worry about; I accept and love myself more.”
Mariana recalls having a house full of people during her treatment. “My house was full; I always had support from family, my leadership, and my colleagues. They were important from the moment I received the diagnosis until the last day of my treatment. I learned to appreciate the little things and the people who care about me,” reveals the employee.
Both women are examples of resilience and emphasize the need for self-care. “Cancer does not discriminate by age or social status. Prevention is our greatest weapon. Love yourself, self-examine, and take care of yourself,” says Mariana. “I always stress to women the importance of this self-care; get your exams and take care of yourself,” reinforces Rosilene.
Game for Life - Bom Futuro also held the Game for Life, a women’s football match between the company's team and the team from the Mato Grosso Cancer Hospital (HCanMT).
“Everything that raises awareness about cancer is important. This event is great because it combines this cause with a passion I have had since childhood. Football means unity and partnership, where everyone has an important and decisive role,” says Mayara Mariano, systems analyst at Bom Futuro.
Paola Bonfim, a human resources analyst at HCanMT, also emphasizes the importance of this awareness. “We are creating a beautiful movement to encourage women to take care of themselves, and I’m happy to be part of it today.”
For Lindalva Paixão, an accounting analyst at Bom Futuro, it is essential that information about prevention and early diagnosis continues throughout the year. “The campaign is not only important in October; we need to take care of ourselves all the time. It’s something to consider at any age,” she reports.
